Ventiquattresimo Canto

Dante’s poem in addition to being a powerful and visionary account of a journey to the afterlife is also universally recognized as a highly detailed painting of the customs and culture of the 14th century.

And in this majestic picture there are significant references to the existence of mechanical clocks in Tuscany since that time, thus confirming that Italy is certainly a country of very ancient clock-making traditions. It is difficult even today to determine exactly when the first timepiece saw the light of day, but in the Divine Comedy for the first time there is indeed mention of gears, wheels and spheres. In the Canto XXIV of Paradise Dante compares the dance of the souls of the blessed to the movement of the gears of a mechanical clock.

‘The blessed,’ he writes, ‘turn in circles with different speeds, like the wheels of a clock, the first of which seems stationary and the last of which is so fast that it seems to fly: those souls showed the degree of gladness according to their rapidity or otherwise of movement.

A Tribute
to the Italian Tradition in Watchmaking

The result of the now multi-year collaboration between Sandro Fratini, one of the world’s greatest watch collectors and creator of the L’O brand, and Marco Mantovani, President of LOCMAN, the new collection expresses the all-Italian DNA of the Brand.

The lightweight and durable 40mm polished titanium case is water-resistant to 10 atmospheres and features a three-part case: bezel, carrure, and screwed back. The wide lugs nicely hug the wrist thanks to the ergonomic shape, which optimizes wearability. The aesthetics of the dial, which reveals the creative intervention of Sandro Fratini, is based on the division here, too, into three parts.

The Guilloché Dial

The central part, featuring guilloché work, with the classic geometric decoration that enhances the luminosity of the dial, and is enclosed by the stylized profile of a rudder. The Arabic numeral hour markers, with extreme legibility and a light design reminiscent of watches of the past century, unfold on a smooth, enameled part, contrasting with the central decoration.

The rehaut bears on the inclined part the dots at the minute track, while the flat part in direct contact with the bezel bears a chemin de fer minute track (so called because it resembles railroad tracks), reminiscent of that once used for pocket watches. The dial of Canto XXIV is protected by a scratch- resistant, extremely transparent sapphire crystal.

Animated by a Swiss Made Seliita SW200 automatic movement that can be admired through the black crystal set in the screwed titanium back, Canto XXIV is offered in four references: with a salmon and black dial and rose gold numerals; with a black dial and rose gold numerals; with a black dial and steel numerals; or finally with a silvered dial and blue numerals. It comes with either a padded natural leather strap or a titanium bracelet.
