Elegance, Modernity and Technique

Aethalia is the ancient name of Elba Island, where Locman has its headquarters. Coined by the ancient Greeks, it means sparkle and refers to the glow that the Argonauts noticed when observing the island from the sea: these were the lights given off by the furnaces of the Etruscans, laboriously engaged in forging the metals in which Elba has always been rich. Technical and craft skills characteristic of Elban peoples since antiquity, again Aethalia is the name the Elbans gave to the mythical ferry that in the 1950s connected the Island to the mainland, the first ferry with direct access for cars, without the need to use the nets that until then hoisted cars onto the deck.

The first tourism on the Island began in those years, and Europe’s first modern ferry symbolized the beginning of adventure, progress, and rebirth. The décor was immaculately kept, the bartenders served cocktails in crystal glasses, and the trip though short was an unforgettable experience. Aethalia punctuated the time of Elbans and served the main routes, at noon and eight o’clock in the evening, closing connections. Her arrival or departure was an event, and summoned by the unmistakable sound of her siren, Elbans gathered at the port to see who was arriving and who was leaving. It was a symbol of modernity, technology and openness to the world, of an Italy facing the future.

It is these values of elegance, modernity and technique that Locman is inspired by with the new Aethalia collection.

The Movement
An Italian Excellence

Aethalia mounts the mechanical hand-wound OISA Caliber 29-50 Cinque Ponti movement. The movement, of 100% Italian manufacture, features handmade Còtes de Genève machining on the bridges enclosing the gear train and Perlage machining, also handmade, on the mainplate.

Equipped with 19 jewels, it features a “Masselottes”-type time regulation, which is thus done through counterweights placed on the balance wheel, rather than through the classic regulating racket located on the balance bridge. The winding autonomy is guaranteed 60 hours, with a daily chronometric tolerance of +/- 10 seconds.

The Case and Dial

The case of the Aethalia watches consists of three pieces: bezel, case middle and screwed bottom, made entirely of biocompatible grade 3 titanium or 18-karat gold. With a diameter of 40 mm, the case features dynamic and ergonomic shapes. The extended lugs enhance the uniqueness of the design and contribute to the watch’s optimal weight and fit. The crown, with quadruple internal o-ring seals, guarantees water resistance up to 10 atmospheres (100 meters). Through the sapphire crystal porthole positioned at the bottom, the mechanical hand-wound OISA Caliber 29-50 Five Bridges movement can be admired in all its beauty.

The sandblast-effect enameled dial, on which the hour markers are displayed, is rimmed by a flange that provides for the minute track, while the central part features guilloché craftsmanship. The anti-reflective sapphire crystal ensures maximum transparency and readability, along with excellent scratch resistance.
At 6 o’clock the Made in Italy inscription stands out, which together with the Italian flag underlines the identity of the OISA project.

Aethalia is offered with either a full grain natural Italian leather strap, produced by Tuscan tanneries and handcrafted, or a biocompatible titanium bracelet for maximum lightness and exceptional resistance to scratches and wear.
